Drill-down path events by event property in Paths analysis
Our customer Henry Zhao (henryzhao@canva.com) from Canva Pty Ltd has requested the ability to drill down event names by a property in Paths, noting the comparison to Mixpanel and Amplitude to help illustrate the use case.
In a Paths analysis, when a customer tracks a generic/grouped event (e.g. a single click event that fires across many different UI elements, distinguished only by a property like action, element, or target), there is currently no way to automatically break that single event node into multiple, distinct nodes based on the property's values. The existing Label field only replaces a node's title with one chosen property value — it does not split a grouped event into separate nodes per distinct value, and if the property itself is non-descriptive (e.g. action = "click" for every instance), the label becomes meaningless since all nodes collapse to the same title. The only current workaround is manually building a separate, filtered Path analysis for each property value, which does not scale and loses the unified path view that makes Paths useful in the first place.
The request is for the ability to select an event property and have Paths automatically render each distinct value of that property as its own node or branch in the chart — while still preserving the underlying event name for context (e.g. distinguishing click → navheader from click → producttile within the same path). Henry noted that both Mixpanel and Amplitude already support this type of property-based event drill-down/breakout natively in their path/flow visualizations, making it a notable competitive gap for customers evaluating or actively comparing these tools against Optimizely Analytics.
