Default image badging overlay deactivates the link in that area of the image.

When using the image badge overlay, the overlay portion of the product image is not an active link, so users must click outside of the overlay, on the product image in order to click an active area.
This is noticeable on the Product Listing Page, and if you have customized the Product Details Page to align the overlay to actually overlay the product image.

    Thank you for submitting this request! We have added this roadmap and I can confirm that this was not intended behavior. Using an image badge should not be reducing the active click area for the underlying link.

    Although we cannot yet guarantee a release date, we expect this to be available within the next few releases and will update this feedback request once it has been completed.
