Remember Me Functionality Doesn't Remember Customers

A customer has received several complaints from their website users regarding the "Remember Me" functionality.

Users of the site will first login to the main page and select "Remember Me" but then as they navigate through the site and land on pages that have sensitive data, like order history, invoice history etc. they are asked to login again - even though they've selected Remember Me.

The Remember Me function doesn't work as most users would expect - by remembering your username or login information as most websites do. The current functionality instead saves some of your persona specifications (pricing, availability, cart, and wishlists) so that it can be viewed without logging in the next time you visit the website using the same browser and same device. Authentication is required when accessing addresses, account settings, user admin, invoice history, order history, or checkout.

Are we able to change this functionality to align better with what customers expect this feature to do? IE remembering the login credentials so they don't need to login several times.

Great news! Our team has released two new features related to 'remember me':

In December 2023 we released a Keep Me Signed In feature, users can maintain their sessions without re-authenticating when they access their account pages or complete checkout.

In January 2024 we added the Pages To Be Remembered field within the Settings, which lets you select which additional pages a user will have access to when you have the Remember Me feature enabled.

I believe it is implemented this way due to PCI DSS requirements.

If you don't want to annoy your customers with log in back after inactivity - just set "Site Timeout Minutes" to a greater value, but it definitely will be a violation of the PCI compliance rules
