Ability to show some products only in search results (not in catalog)

Currently, our website gives customers access to around 40,000 core products and about 60,000 restricted products which are searchable/findable by drilling down into the catalog or searching with the on-site search box.

Looking forward, we are looking to add roughly an additional 200,000 products to the site. However, some of these products are more specialized, almost duplicates, etc. They will be needed on the site, though, as we're looking to eventually allow customers to purchase and/or reorder ANY product we offer on the site.

The concern is we don't want to make the catalog so unwieldly with all the products that it becomes difficult to navigate or for customers to understand the difference between products.

We'd love functionality where we would be able to tag specific products (part numbers) to ONLY show in the search results, yet remain hidden within the drill-down catalog itself.

    Hi Sara -

Our partner was able to customize to make this work, but still think this would be a great feature to add to the platform. My thoughts below...

Would you desire this to be only a product level setting?

      1. Do other systems that you have already have this data at the product level that would be used to populate or would this be assigned manually in Configured Commerce?
We will be assigning directly in Configured Commerce for now, but have talked about storing this data in our PIM and integrating it with the platform at some point.

      2. What are expectations as it relates to Variant Products - would specific variants be allowed to be 'hidden' from navigation or would only the parent level be allowed to be hidden?
No existing use cases now for Variants, but we have plans to use them in the near future. This feature would be helpful.

    1. Are there additional things we should be reviewing tied to the category assignment?

      1. Would these hidden products live inside of regular categories and display the breadcrumbs?
ideally, yes. Since they're still searchable/viewable through search results, if someone views the page, the product should utilize breadcrumbs from the correct category assigned, not just a generic bucket.

      2. Would there be an expectation that full categories can also be hidden from general navigation?
        Would be nice.

    2. Would the expectation be that these product URLs exist in the sitemap since they are valid products or should they not be in the sitemap because they are hidden from navigation/crawlers?
Ability to exclude certain ones would be nice. I'm not sure there's a one size fits all answer to this one, especially when factoring in SEO strategies that differ across companies.
